This tutorial demonstrates how to change the colour of irises by first isolating them with a Selection Marquee, then Flood Filling them with either a Solid Colour, Pattern or Gradient. To work along, you are welcome to download the images I am working with Here. Unzip the file and open the images onto Paint Shop Pro’s workspace.
111+ Beginner PDF Tutorials Understanding Layers On-line Tutorial Understanding Blending Modes On-line Tutorial
1/ Open your choice of Start Image onto Paint Shop Pro’s workspace.
2/ Then from the top menu, choose Layers then choose Promote To Layer, (or choose Promote Background Layer - depending on your version).
3/ Activate the Zoom Tool and left-click your image to enlarge it.
I left-clicked my cat image three times.
4/ Now, from the Tools Toolbar, activate the Freehand (Selection) Tool.

And set the following attributes into the Tool Options Palette or Ribbon.
Paint Shop Pro 7
Paint Shop Pro 8 9 X XI X2 + Ensure the Mode is set to Add (Shift)
Now, click-and-stretch a lasso line around the left-side iris; being careful to isolate just the iris - the Freehand Tool: as demonstrated in my on-line tutorial here.

Undo Mistakes Don’t worry if you make an error with the application, as soon as you notice - press your Delete key; keep tapping the Delete key to return the Selection Line to a previous state, then reapply the Selection Marquee Line. Alternatively, click the Undo arrow from the top menu.
After you have applied a Selection Line around the left-side eye, pass your cursor over the exact area where you began the Selection Line - and double-left-click. This completes the circuit, and converts the Selection Line into a Selection Marquee - as illustrated by the screen captures above.
5/ Paint Shop Pro 7, press and hold your Shift key: Paint Shop Pro 8 9 X XI X2 +, because the Mode has been set to Add (Shift), you don’t need to press the Shift key.
Now, click-and-stretch a Selection Line around the right-side iris; after you have completed this, both irises will be isolated with a Selection Marquee, and you are ready for the next step.
 |
 |
Note Paint Shop Pro 8 9 X XI X2 +: You can adjust Selection Marquee by changing the Mode to Remove (Ctrl), then isolating the area you want to remove with the Freehand Tool. By working between Add (Shift) and Remove (Ctrl), you can reposition the Selection Marquee to fit the iris, snugly.
Paint Shop Pro 7: You can recreate Add (Shift) and Remove (Ctrl) by pressing your Shift or Ctrl keys (respectively), as you stretch-and-click the Freehand Selection Marquee.
Tip You can preserve the Selection Marquees by saving them to an Alpha Channel.
6/ From the top menu, choose Selections then choose Convert to layer - or choose Selections then choose Promote selection to layer - depending on your version. This places the Selection Marquees onto their own layer. You are now working on the Promoted Selection layer.
 |
Now you have isolated both irises, it is time to change their colour. An ideal tool for this is the The Flood Fill Tool. When utilising this tool in this manner, you must change the Blend Mode from Normal to Colour; changing the Blend Mode to Colour makes the subsequent colour application luminous - which is crucial to the success of this technique. Bear in mind, when choosing the Flood Fill Tool, you can flood fill the selected irises with either a Solid Colour, Pattern or Gradient of your choice - which can create psychedelic effects.
7/ Apply Colour From the Tools Toolbar, activate the Flood Fill Tool.

Then set the following attributes into the Tool Options Palette or Ribbon: Remember to change the Blend Mode from Normal to Colour.
Paint Shop Pro 7
Paint Shop Pro 8 9 X XI X2 +
8/ Set the Foreground to a Solid Colour, Pattern or Gradient of your choice.

The Background colour has no bearing on the Flood Fill Tool.
Now, left-click inside each selection marquee, to fill them with your colour choice.
9/ Working on the top layer, activate the Eraser Tool and with a small hard brush - paint over the white glints, (or the pupil), to remove unwanted colour. Eraser Tool Tutorial.
(Set the Hardness and Opacity to 100%).
10/ Press the Undo arrow to go backwards, and experiment with different colour fills; and when you are happy with the result, press Ctrl then D to remove the Selection Marquee.
Tip Smooth any ragged transition lines between the eyeball and the iris with the Soften/Retouch Tool, setting a very low Hardness and Opacity.
11/ And when you are happy with the result, optimise and save your work.
