Utilise The Freehand Selection Tool PDF Tutorial

1/
Open your Start Image onto Paint Shop Pro’s workspace.

Tip
Extend its (grey) workspace by left-clicking then dragging out one of its corners.

Tip
You will find this easier if you Zoom into your image .
2/
Now, from the left-side Tools Toolbar, activate The Freehand Selection Tool.

And enter the following attributes into the Tool Options Palette or Ribbon. (I find the best Selection type to work with is Point to Point).

Paint Shop Pro 7

Paint Shop Pro 8 9 X XI X2 Photo + (Ultimate) Ensure Mode is set to Add (Shift)

Undo Mistakes
Don’t worry if you make an error with the Selection Line’s application, as soon as you notice - press your Delete key; keep tapping the Delete key to return the Selection Line to a previous state, then reapply it.

Close Or Cancel The Selection Marquee
To close, or cancel the Selection Marquee at any time, either double-left-click - or
right-click once
.

Esc Key Tip
Whilst applying the Lasso Line, you can cancel it by tapping your Esc Key.

You are looking to click-and-stretch a Selection Line around the Flag or Orbs contour’s.
Therefore, left-click and carefully stretch-and-click your Selection Line, following the subject’s edges slowly, and bit-by-bit.

Continue clicking-and-stretching your Selection Line around the contours, in a complete circuit; and when you pass the area where you began the Selection Line, either
double-left-click - or right-click-once. This completes your circuit - subsequently converting the Selection Line into a Selection Marquee (moving dotted lines).

Isolate Each Orb With A Selection Marquee
If you are utilising the Orbs image, remember to isolate each orb with a Selection Marquee.
Paint Shop Pro 7, because you don’t have an Add (Shift) Mode in the Freehand Selection Tool’s Options Palette; after isolating the first orb with a Selection Marquee;- press and keep pressed your Keyboard’s Shift Key, then simultaneously isolate the second then third orbs with a Selection Marquee. (Pressing the Shift Key places a tiny Plus icon next to the cursor, and lets you surround more than one area with a Selection Marquee).

After you have double-left-clicked or right-clicked once to convert the Selection Line into a Selection Marquee, you are ready for the next step.

3/
Now, from the top menu, choose Selections then choose Invert. The Selection Marquee will now surround the image’s outer border as well as the Flag/Orbs.

4/Removing Your Image’s Colour
From the top menu; Paint Shop Pro 7, choose Colours then choose Adjust then choose Channel Mixer
Paint Shop Pro 8 9 X XI X2 +, choose Adjust then choose Colour then choose Channel Mixer.

All Versions
From the subsequent Channel Mixer dialogue box, enter the following Monochrome settings, then click OK.

PSP X Example

Tip
To create maximum contrast between the coloured and monochrome pixels, Invert the Selection Marquee (Selections then Invert), then press Shift and tap the H Key, (from the subsequent Hue/Saturation/Lightness dialogue box, click the Reset to Default tab if necessary).

Then increase the Saturation’s percentage (slider).

5/
When you are happy with your result, from the top menu, choose Selections then choose Select None. (Ctrl then D).

6/
Congratulations, you have created your colour-popping conversion.
