Resize Images Using The Smart Carver Command - Beginners Plus Written For PaintShop Photo Pro X3
|
 |
 |
|
This tutorial demonstrates how to resize photographs, making them narrower, wider, shorter or longer; using PaintShop Photo Pro X3’s new Smart Carver Command. To work along, you are welcome to download the Start Image I am working with Here. Unzip the file and open the image onto PaintShop Photo Pro X3’s workspace.
Note Photographs will always react uniquely, therefore, for personal results, take a little time to familiarise yourself with this interesting new addition.
Smart Carver Notes The Smart Carver lets you make a photograph narrower, wider, shorter, or longer - without distorting its content. This feature lets you change the aspect ratio without noticeably altering the image: it does this by automatically detecting and removing zones within a picture that have little structural detail. In addition, you can target a specific zone to remove from the photograph, regardless of its level of detail. You can also preserve specific objects or image areas.
Note Click the following icon to launch PaintShop Photo Pro X3.
 |
From the subsequent program, click the Full Editor tab, and PaintShop Photo Pro X3 will open.
If you would like the Full Editor to launch every time you click the PaintShop Photo Pro’s launch icon: then from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Preferences then choose General Program Preferences then choose Default Launch Workspace. From the subsequent Preferences dialogue box, mark the Full Editor circle. (This can be changed at any time in future)

1/ To begin, open your choice of Start Image onto PaintShop Photo Pro’s workspace. (File then Open - Ctrl then O).
Tip Centralise your image by double-left-clicking its top menu-bar.
Workspace Notes It is worth taking a little time to set up the workspace how you like: for example, to display the Layers or Materials Palettes - click a tick before your choice, as illustrated above. In addition, if you find the Guides and Ruers are getting in the way, remove them by removing their ticks, as illustrated below.
Once you have it to your liking, it is a good idea to Save your workspace; - top menu, then File then Workspace then choose either Save (or Load if you have saved a previous workspace).
2/ Now, from the top menu, choose Image then choose Smart Carver.
A large Smart Carver dialogue box will appear. (You will be working exclusively within this dialogue box).
If loss of detail is not your main concern, and you would like to resize your image quickly: (from the Smart Carving area, highlighted above), click one of the green arrow choices.
Your choices are either, Contract the image horizontally, Expand the image horizontally, Contract the image vertically, or Expand the image vertically.
Now, repeatedly click your choice of setting, until your image has been resized to your liking.
Retain your image’s aspect ratio by activating the opposite Smart Carving setting, (highlighted below), and repeatedly left-click until you are happy with the result.
Remove Or Preserve An Object To remove an object or area, click the Remove tab, and apply the Remove Brush to areas of the photograph you want to remove.
To protect an image-area from being removed or altered during the scaling process, click the Preserve tab, and apply the Preserve Brush to areas of the photograph that need protecting.
Notes In the Object Removal area, you can alter the Brush Size by moving the slider to the left or to the right.
If you are happy with your scaling, click OK. Clicking OK closes the Smart Carver dialogue box, and takes the resized image back to PaintShop Photo Pro X3’s workspace.
If you aren’t happy with the scale, click the Reset tab, and start again .
Sharpening Tip After any image resize, it’s good practice to apply a Sharpening Filter.
3/ Congratulations, your work is complete and is ready to save.
Tip You may need to further resize your image using PaintShop Photo Pro’s Resize Command or the Pick Tool.
