The big freeze by wendi

This tutorial demonstrates how to freeze objects by changing their Layer Blend Modes. To work along exactly, download the start images HereUnzip the file and open the contents onto Paint Shop Pro’s workspace.

Beginners
Understanding Layers

1/
Open your Start Images onto Paint Shop Pro’s workspace.

2/
Then drag the starfish images to one side, (by dragging their upper menu bars), then extend the iced arrow image’s grey workspace by left-clicking and dragging out one of its corners. Then activate a starfish by left-clicking its upper menu bar, then right-click its upper menu bar - and from the subsequent drop-down list, click Copy.

3/
Now, activate the iced arrow image by left-clicking its upper menu bar, then right-click it, and from the subsequent drop-down list, click Paste - then from the fly out menu, choose Paste as New Layer. Your first starfish will then be placed on top of the iced arrow image - as illustrated below.

4/
Copy and paste (as a new layer) the second starfish onto the iced arrow image; and when you have completed this, you are ready for the next step.

Tip
To save PC resources, you can safely delete the original starfish images.

Layers Palette Notes
I am utilising Paint Shop Pro X; if your Paint Shop Pro X +’s Layers Palette looks slightly different to mine, link
Here to learn how to change its appearance.

There are slight Layers palette differences between Paint Shop Pro versions; however, the settings work in exactly the same way.

Now, from the left-side Tools Toolbar, activate the Mover/Move Tool.

Then left-click over a starfish, and drag them (one at a time), to their final positions over the iced arrow.

Duplicate A Starfish
To duplicate a starfish, right-click its Layer, and from the subsequent drop-down list, click Duplicate. After duplicating your starfish, (with the Mover/Move Tool active), left-click and drag the duplicated star fish away from the original.

Paint Shop Pro 7: to duplicate a layer; from the top menu, choose Layers then choose Duplicate.

Tip
To rotate, or resize your starfish, press your K or D key (depending on your version), then resize, or rotate your starfish by manipulating the subsequent Vector Transformation Bounding Box.
PSP 7, PSP 8 9, PSP X +

Tip
Click another Toolbar Tool to disable the Pick or Deformation Tool’s bounding box.

After you have repositioned and duplicated your starfish - you are ready for the next step.

5/
From the Layers Palette, activate a starfish, then click open the Blending Modes list, and change the Blend Mode from Normal to Lighten by clicking a tick before Lighten - as demonstrated below. Changing the Blend Mode to Lighten blends the starfish’s pixels with the pixels of the ice image below it; subsequently creating a frozen appearance.
Experiment with different
Blend Modes to see how they change your starfish’s appearance.

6/
Now, activate the remaining starfish layers, (consecutively), and change both their Blend Modes from Normal to Lighten

Congratulations, you have completed the big freeze,
Crop away any extraneous black space, and your work is ready to save.
